To join Cub Scouting he must be at least in 1st grade and can be as old as 5th grade. First graders are called Tiger Scouts. Second graders are called Wolves. Third graders are called Bears. Fourth graders are called Webelo 1s. Fifth graders are called Webelo 2s.

I missed the September New Scout Roundup. Can my son still join Scouts?
Boys can join Scouting any time per year. Our preference is that they join between September and November.

Money is tight right now and can’t afford the registration fee. Is there anything that can be done?
Pack 62 offers scholarships to any family who asks.

Where do I get my son his uniform?
Glacier's Edge Scout Shop is located at 5846 Manufacturer's Drive
Madison, WI 53704-6278.  Visit www.glaciersedge.org for current hours and more information.

What other things do I need to buy for my son?
Typically you would purchase a blue shirt, Red pack numbers, a World Crest Badge, a Den number patch a shoulder patch, a neckerchief and slide. The Pack gives the boys their rank books as a gift.

My son’s friend wants to join Scouting but he lives outside the Mount Horeb School District?
Yes.

What Cub Scouts Do

What’s the difference between Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts?
Cub Scouts is designed for boys in grades 1-5. Boy Scouts is designed for boys in 6th grade or older. Cub Scouts is lead entirely by adults who set up and execute the program. Boy Scouts is boy-lead. Other adults associated with the Boy Scout Troop merely offer guidance.

What’s a Cub Scout Pack?
The Pack is the largest group of Cub Scouts within the Mount Horeb community. It is comprised of boys of all grades 1-5. The Pack is run by the Cubmaster. In Mount Horeb the Pack has approximately 90 boys.

What’s a Cub Scout Den?
A Den is a small group (6-8 boys) all of the same school grade. A Tiger Den is comprised of 1st graders. A Wolf Den is comprised of 2nd graders. A Bear Den is comprised of 3rd graders. Fourth graders are called Webelo 1s. Fifth graders are called Webelo 2s. Each Den is lead by 1 or 2 Den leaders. The den leaders communicate with the Cubmaster to provide the Scouting program.

What’s a Pack meeting?
Pack meetings are a monthly gathering of all of the boys in the Pack. At Pack meetings we provide information about upcoming events, recognize awards that boys have earned, perform skits and other activities depending on the month’s Scouting theme.

When are Pack meetings?
Unless there is a holiday conflict all Pack meetings are the 1st Monday of the month from September-June. Usually the Pack meetings are held in the IC Cafeteria.

We have a family conflict with the Pack meetings. Is that OK?
Missing Pack meetings is certainly acceptable. It is far more important to make it to your den meetings where your son will be working on rank advancement.

What’s a Pack activity?
A Pack activity is a group gathering that is intended to be fun for the Scout and his family. We usually have one Pack activity per month and they can be a variety of things: miniature golf, bowling, rocket launches, pinewood derby, swimming, conservation projects.

I can’t find a sitter for my younger children. Can I bring them to Pack meetings and Pack activities?
Absolutely.

How often do we meet in our dens and where?
Usually Tigers, Wolves and Bears meet once per month. Webelos typically meet twice per month. The time and location of the meeting is completely up to the members of the den.

Can I drop my son off at the den meeting and pick him up at the end of the meeting?
Nope. You, or another adult that you designate, must be with your son during den or pack meetings.

Can my son be put in a den with his friend?
Absolutely. If your son wants to see a familiar face at den meetings we can certainly accommodate.

Fundraising

Do I have to sell popcorn?
It isn’t mandatory to sell popcorn. But a big part of the success of the Pack and what benefits we provide through the course of the year are directly tied to popcorn sales. If we have a strong popcorn sale we can provide a cost-free program for the remainder of the year.

What other fundraisers, besides popcorn, does the Pack participate in?
None at the Pack-level. We don’t want the boys to spend all year selling. We want them Scouting. We may do some fundraisers through the year, but may ask parents to participate instead of the Scouts.

What other opportunities will my son have when he gets older?
In the spring of your son’s 5th grade year he will have the opportunity to ‘cross over’ into Boy Scouts. Boy Scouts is a program for boys in 6th grade and older. Troop 62 in Mount Horeb is our Boy Scout troop. http://www.mhtroop62.com/

When does my son get to go camping?
Boys in 1st through 3rd grade can only camp at Council-offered camps. The council runs several camps in the summer. Day Camp is usually in June and run at Brigham Park. Overnight Camp is at the Ed Bryant Scouting Reservation up near Mauston.

Adult Leadership

I can’t be a leader, but I still want to help my son’s den. What can I do to help?
You can most certainly help. If you have a profession or hobby that may be of interest to the boys in the den, ask the den leader if you can run a meeting. If you happen to be from one of the three magic professions: Construction, Medical or First Responder, you are already 90% of the way there.

Is their training available for people who want to be leaders?
Yep. There are 4 components to the BSA training program. Youth Protection and Basic Leader Training can be taken online. The council also offers New Leader Essentials and Leader-Specific training. Each of these 2 sessions is approximately 90 minutes long and offered several times throughout the year.

What other resources can help me be a leader?
The best resource for a particular rank is to talk to a leader who just executed the same rank program the previous year.
We also have a Pack library with several books that can help. http://www.mhscouts.com/PackLibrary.htm
There are also tons of websites dedicated to scouting. http://www.mhscouts.com/UsefulLinks.htm

How much of a time commitment does it take to be a den leader?
As much as you want. Usually since den meetings are between 1 and 1.5 hours long plan on it taking 3-4 hours to plan and prep for a den meeting.
